Microsoft Bids for Yahoo

February 1st, 2008

What a way to start a Friday morning… Microsoft has put in a $45 Billion bid for Yahoo. Normally, I don’t mind big corporate mergers, but this one has me a bit concerned. Yahoo has done a great job of supporting Flash / Flex / Actionscript developers in recent years, and I have a feeling that Microsoft would probably put an end to that. That seems logical, because Silverlight is competing with the Flash Player (you can’t expect Microsoft to support their competition). It would also give Microsoft another platform for launching RIAs on the Silverlight platform (which is good for Microsoft, but could be bad for Flash and Actionscript developers if they choose to discontinue their AS3 libraries). I guess in the end we will just have to wait and see what happens.

Must be grim days over there. They also recently announced moving into the online business for Exchange and SharePoint. But – try to get Exchange hooked up with BlackBerry? They are late into the game compared to companies like groupSPARK (http://www.groupspark.com/) and their dedicated private branders.
